Heavily Armed Security Men Raid Former VP Namadi Sambo's House In Kaduna State

Heavily armed security operatives on Wednesday raided the residence of a former vice president, Namadi Sambo, in Kaduna.

The operatives are believed to have come from the State Security Service, SSS, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC.
An ICPC operative in the North-West zonal office of the agency in Kaduna, confirmed the raid to our reporter.

“Yes, we carried out a raid of the former Vice President Sambo’s house around 3:00pm today (Wednesday) with other agencies,” the operative said but declined to give further details because he has no official permission to speak to journalists.

“You can contact our headquarters in Abuja for details,” he added.

Umar Sani, the former media aide to Mr. Sambo, who also confirmed Wednesday’s raid said it was the fifth by security operatives on the house.
He accused Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress of allegedly intimidating people to scare possible contenders in 2019.

“This is not the first time they are searching the house. They have been coming to search the house on several occasions,” Mr. Sani said.

“Today they came with a court order and gave a copy of the court order to the Chief Security Officer in the house.

“After they finished the search, they wrote at the back page of the court order that they gave to the CSO that they didn’t find anything and they left.
“So we are not surprised because it has now become a routine activity,” Mr. Sani said.

learnt that the operatives arrived the newly renovated residence of the former vice president at No. 1 Alimi road in Kaduna, around 3:07 p.m., conducted their search and left at about 5:28 p.m.

“The heavily armed team came in a white Toyota Hilux, a Toyota Corolla and a Coaster bus, a Toyota Hilux van and a dark colored Toyota Corolla car.
“The Corolla was parked outside as the operatives numbering up to ten conducted the search within the residence while the others waited outside,” a resident of the neighborhood who witnessed the raid said.

A witness also told our reporter that some operatives blocked the major road leading to the residence to wade off motorists and other passers-by plying the road while other operatives went into the residence.

Mr. Sambo served as deputy to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015.
reported how the ex-vice president in May held a closed-door meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
It is not clear if the earlier searches mentioned by Mr. Sani were discussed at that meeting as details of the meeting were not disclosed.

NANS Rejects Tuition Fees Increase By Varsities

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will resist plans by some tertiary institutions to increase tuition fees, its President, Mr Chinonso Obasi has said.

Obasi, in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Abuja, said that NANS had received the report that no fewer than 38 tertiary institutions had concluded plans to jack up tuition fees.

The NANS president said that the association was pained by the move as Nigerian students had over the years been made to bear the brunt of administrative ineptitude of managers of tertiary institutions.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had on Monday alerted Nigerians to the increase of tuition fees by 38 universities due to poor funding by the federal and state governments.

He regretted that the APC-led administration had not showed enough commitment to improving the education sector and the plight of students.

He said that Nigerian students did not deserve such harsh punishment as fee increase would further limit the capacity of students to dream of a better future.

“Consequently NANS wishes to serve notice to the authorities concerned that Nigerian students will never endure any increase in tuition at this time of the nation’s socio-economic challenges.
“If administrators of Nigeria’s educational institutions have run out of ideas of funding and sustaining educational institutions in the country, they should feel free to liaise with students to explore new ways of funding the institutions.
“The President Buhari administration should recognise that this is time to reward the understanding and cooperation of Nigerian students with education subsidy, proper funding of education and adequate welfare initiatives for students,’’ he said.

'We drank our urine to survive' – Nigerian lady who spent 10 days in the Sahara Desert

A Nigerian woman who wanted to travel to Europe via Libya for greener pastures was lucky to be rescued alive in the Sahara Desert after 10 days.

Adaora said she had to drink her urine to survive

A 22-year-old Nigerian lady who thought she was leaving the country for greener pastures in Europe but ended up spending 10 days in the Sahara Desert has told of her heart-wrenching experience.
The lady who has been identified only as Adaora, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that she and others who were stranded in the desert had to resort to drinking their urine to survive when they had no more option.
Adaora was one of 50 migrants abandoned in the desert by human traffickers after they had left Agadez in the Niger Republic for Libya but were abandoned by the traffickers who left with all their belongings including food and money.

Adaora who was one of the lucky few to survive after the death of many of the migrants narrated how they faced death but by divine intervention, managed to survive.
Narrating her experience, Adaora said:
“We were in the desert for 10 days. After five days, the driver abandoned us. He left with all of our belongings, saying he was going to pick us up in a couple of hours, but he never did.
Two days after we were abandoned, 44 of the migrants died, leaving six of us and we decided to start walking to look for help.
Those that died were too weak to keep going. We buried a few, but there were just too many to bury and we didn’t have the strength to do it,” Adaora said.
She added that she collapsed while walking and two of the other migrants carried her until they met a truck driver.
“We had to drink our own urine to survive. I couldn’t walk anymore. I wanted to give up.”
The six of them, she continued, were rescued by a truck driver who took them to local authorities who then alerted International Organisation for Migration (IOM), an arm of the United Nations, in Dirkou, Agadez.
IOM, in a statement, said it rescued no fewer than 600 people since April 2017, through a new search and rescue operation that targeted migrants stranded in the Sahara Desert.
The agency, however, regretted that 52 migrants died over the period, according to the statement released on Tuesday.
“We are enhancing our capacity to assist vulnerable migrants stranded in Northern Agadez, towards the Niger-Libya border. Saving lives in the desert is becoming more urgent than ever.
Since the beginning of the year, we have been receiving frequent calls to rescue victims who embark on this route‎,” Giuseppe Loprete, the Chief of Mission for IOM in Niger said.
On June 9, 2017, another 92 migrants were also rescued through an IOM search and rescue operation, among them were 30 women and children. More recently, 24 migrants were taken to Seguedine, where one died on arrival.

“Among the 23 survivors are migrants from Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire. It was not clear for how long they had been walking in the deserts of central Niger.
They had been in a group of 75 migrants in three different cars, eventually abandoned by smugglers during the journey north,” Loprete said.
